Twelve Monkeys (1995)

Quartile rating: 8/10 · 1 rating

In the year 2035, convict James Cole reluctantly volunteers to be sent back in time to discover the origin of a deadly virus that wiped out nearly all of the earth's population and forced the survivors into underground communities. But when Cole is mistakenly sent to 1990 instead of 1996, he's arrested and locked up in a mental hospital. There he meets psychiatrist Dr. Kathryn Railly and the son of a famous virus expert who may hold the key to the Army of the 12 Monkeys; thought to be responsible for unleashing the killer disease.

The Quartile Take

Twelve Monkeys is a visually audacious, narratively intricate sci-fi thriller that earns top marks across most dimensions. The plot is a masterclass in time-loop construction, weaving fate, memory, and paradox into a coherent and emotionally resonant whole. Willis delivers one of his finest dramatic performances, and Brad Pitt's manic, Oscar-nominated turn as Jeffrey Goines is genuinely electrifying — acting is a clear strength. Gilliam's cinematography is unmistakably his own: Dutch angles, distorted lenses, oppressive institutional spaces, and a color palette that distinguishes each era — visually exceptional. Novelty is high because the film blends La Jetée's source material with Gilliam's singular surrealist voice into something wholly distinctive and unrepeatable. The ending is haunting and intellectually satisfying in its tragic inevitability, but the circular, closed-loop resolution — while thematically fitting — is emotionally somewhat cold and withholding, making it the one category that falls just short of the film's otherwise exceptional standard.
