Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)

Quartile rating: 5/10 · 1 rating

After nearly 50 years of hiding, Leatherface returns to terrorize a group of idealistic influencers who accidentally disrupt his carefully shielded world in a remote Texas town.

The Quartile Take

This Netflix sequel/reboot is a largely by-the-numbers slasher that recycles the Leatherface mythology without adding meaningful depth. The gentrification angle is a mildly interesting hook but is squandered quickly in favor of rote kills. Acting is functional at best, with thin characterization making it hard to invest in the victims. Cinematography has some decent atmospheric moments and slick production value befitting a Netflix production, elevating it slightly above the script. Novelty is low — despite the gentrification premise, the film is essentially a formulaic legacy sequel that brings little new to the franchise or the genre. The ending, including a legacy character's fate and a rushed conclusion, feels unsatisfying and poorly earned.
