Pig (2021)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

A truffle hunter who lives alone in the Oregon wilderness must visit Portland to find the mysterious person who stole his beloved foraging pig.

The Quartile Take

Pig subverts its revenge-thriller premise entirely, revealing itself as a quiet, devastating meditation on grief, authenticity, and loss. Nicolas Cage delivers one of his most restrained and genuinely moving performances, stripping away all his trademark excess to find something raw and real. The film's novelty is high because it so deliberately dismantles genre expectations — what looks like John Wick with a pig becomes something far more melancholic and philosophical. The cinematography is competent and atmospheric but not visually distinguished. The plot is deliberately understated, which works thematically but leaves some threads underdeveloped. The ending is emotionally resonant but quietly understated to the point of feeling slightly unresolved for some viewers.
