Spaceman (2024)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

Six months into a solo mission, a lonely astronaut confronts the cracks in his marriage with help from a mysterious creature he discovers on his ship.

The Quartile Take

Spaceman is anchored by Adam Sandler's genuinely committed dramatic performance, arguably his most nuanced since Uncut Gems, lending real emotional weight to an otherwise uneven film. The premise—a cosmic spider as therapist/confessor—is intriguing and absurdist, but the execution struggles to fully pay off its central conceit. The cinematography is serviceable and occasionally moody but rarely transcendent. The narrative loses momentum in its middle stretch, and the ending feels emotionally deflated rather than earned, failing to resolve its themes with sufficient resonance. The film occupies familiar existential sci-fi territory (lonely astronaut, failing marriage) without pushing its stranger elements far enough to fully distinguish itself.
