Sergio (2020)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

A sweeping drama set in the chaotic aftermath of the US invasion of Iraq, where the life of top UN diplomat Brazilian Sérgio Vieira de Mello hangs in the balance during the most treacherous mission of his career.

The Quartile Take

Sergio is a well-intentioned biopic-drama that struggles to balance its political thriller elements with a romantic subplot, resulting in an uneven narrative. Wagner Moura delivers a committed central performance and the supporting cast is solid, but the script never fully capitalizes on the complexity of its subject. The cinematography is competent and captures war-torn settings adequately without being particularly distinctive. The film follows a fairly conventional biopic structure with flashback framing that feels formulaic, and the tragic ending — while historically inevitable — lands with less emotional impact than intended due to the narrative's failure to fully invest the audience in all its threads.
