Past Lives (2023)

Quartile rating: 8/10 · 1 rating

After decades apart, childhood friends Nora and Hae Sung are reunited in New York for one fateful weekend as they confront notions of destiny, love, and the choices that make a life.

The Quartile Take

Past Lives is a quietly devastating romance elevated by exceptional performances from Greta Lee and Teo Yoo, who communicate volumes through restraint and longing. Celine Song's direction draws out deeply felt emotional truths with remarkable economy. The cinematography is luminous and considered, using New York and Seoul as emotional landscapes. The ending — Nora weeping on the stoop as Hae Sung walks away — is one of the most affecting final scenes in recent memory. The plot, while beautifully executed, follows a familiar romantic-melancholy arc without major structural surprise, keeping it at an above-average rather than exceptional level.
