Celine Song's direction draws out deeply felt emotional truths with remarkable economy. The cinematography is luminous and considered, using New York and Seoul as emotional landscapes. The ending — Nora weeping on the stoop as Hae Sung walks away — is one of the most affecting final scenes in recent memory. The plot, while beautifully executed, follows a familiar romantic-melancholy arc without major structural surprise, keeping it at an above-average rather than exceptional level.
