Pearl Harbor (2001)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

The lifelong friendship between Rafe McCawley and Danny Walker is put to the ultimate test when the two ace fighter pilots become entangled in a love triangle with beautiful Naval nurse Evelyn Johnson. But the rivalry between the friends-turned-foes is immediately put on hold when they find themselves at the center of Japan's devastating attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.

The Quartile Take

Pearl Harbor is a visually spectacular blockbuster that earns genuine praise for its cinematography — the attack sequence remains a technically impressive and immersive set piece. However, the film is let down by a formulaic and melodramatic love triangle that feels derivative of Titanic's romantic blueprint, wooden performances from the leads, and a bloated runtime that underserves the historical weight of the event. The ending, extending well beyond the attack into the Doolittle Raid, feels tacked on and narratively unsatisfying. Novelty is low given how closely it mimics prior disaster-romance blockbusters without a distinctive voice or original conception.
