When a willful young man tries to venture beyond his sequestered Pennsylvania hamlet, his actions set off a chain of chilling incidents that will alter the community forever.
The Village is a visually stunning film with Roger Deakins' cinematography elevating the material considerably — the color palette and atmosphere are genuinely exceptional. The acting is solid, particularly Bryce Dallas Howard's performance as the blind Ivy. However, the much-hyped twist ending is widely considered underwhelming and deflating, undermining the careful tension built throughout. The plot is intriguing in setup but collapses under scrutiny once the twist is revealed, feeling like a narrative trick rather than a satisfying mystery. Novelty is moderate — Shyamalan's signature style gives it a distinctive voice, but the twist-reliant structure was already becoming formulaic by this point in his career.
