The Wrecking Crew (2008)

Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating

A celebration of the musical work of a group of session musicians known as "The Wrecking Crew." a band that provided back-up instrumentals to such legendary recording artists as Frank Sinatra, The Beach Boys, and Bing Crosby.

The Quartile Take

This documentary shines a light on a genuinely overlooked and fascinating slice of music history — the anonymous session players behind countless iconic recordings. The novelty is high because the subject matter was largely unknown to general audiences, revealing the hidden architects of the pop music golden age. The talking-head and archival footage approach is fairly standard for the genre, keeping cinematography at an average documentary level. The storytelling is engaging and celebratory but follows a conventional documentary structure. Acting is irrelevant as a category but the interview subjects are compelling and natural. The ending wraps up warmly but without particular surprise or power.
