Hustle (2022)

Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating

After discovering a once-in-a-lifetime player with a rocky past abroad, a down on his luck basketball scout takes it upon himself to bring the phenom to the States without his team's approval. Against the odds, they have one final shot to prove they have what it takes to make it in the NBA.

The Quartile Take

Hustle follows a fairly familiar sports underdog template—scout with something to prove discovers raw talent, faces institutional resistance, earns redemption—which keeps Novelty low despite solid execution. Where the film genuinely shines is in its performances: Adam Sandler delivers one of his most grounded and emotionally resonant turns, and Juancho Hernangómez holds his own alongside a cast peppered with real NBA talent, lending the film authentic texture. The cinematography is competent and energetic in its basketball sequences but unremarkable otherwise. The plot hits expected beats without many surprises, and the ending, while satisfying, is telegraphed well in advance. A well-crafted, crowd-pleasing dramedy elevated primarily by Sandler's commitment.
