The Darkest Hour (2011)

Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating

In Moscow, five young people lead the charge against an alien race which has attacked Earth via our power supply.

The Quartile Take

The Darkest Hour has a somewhat intriguing central conceit — invisible aliens that feed on electricity, set against the unusual backdrop of Moscow — which gives it modest novelty points. However, the execution is largely poor across the board. The plot is thin and formulaic survival-horror with underdeveloped characters and predictable beats. The acting is bland, with a largely forgettable young cast going through the motions. Cinematography is serviceable but uninspired, failing to make strong use of its Moscow setting. The ending is abrupt and unsatisfying, offering little payoff for the journey. The alien concept was fresh enough to distinguish it slightly from generic invasion fare, but the film squanders most of its potential.
