The Quartile Take

Tarot (2024) is a competent but formulaic supernatural horror entry. The premise of cursed tarot cards picking off a group of friends one by one is inherently derivative of the 'cursed object' horror subgenre, offering little narrative innovation. The script relies heavily on genre conventions—exposition-heavy setup, predictable kill order, thin character development—keeping the plot squarely below average. Acting is passable but unremarkable, with the young ensemble delivering serviceable performances without standout moments. Cinematography has some atmospheric lighting and decent creature design for the zodiac-themed monsters, earning it a slight edge above average. Novelty is limited; while the tarot/zodiac aesthetic provides a fresh visual skin, the underlying structure is recycled from countless similar horror films. The ending resolves in a generic, unsurprising fashion that fails to subvert expectations or leave a lasting impression.
