During a pandemic lockdown, Nico, a young man with rare immunity, must overcome martial law, murderous vigilantes and a powerful family to reunite with his love, Sara.
Songbird was one of the first films shot during and about the COVID-19 pandemic, giving it a degree of novelty as a near-future exploitation of real-world anxieties. However, the plot is formulaic — a thin romantic chase wrapped in dystopian trappings — with underdeveloped characters and predictable beats. Acting is serviceable but unremarkable across the cast. Cinematography is functional but constrained by its low-budget, rushed production. The ending resolves with little emotional payoff, feeling rushed and unearned. Its distinctiveness comes almost entirely from its topical timing rather than genuine craft or vision.
