Uglies (2024)

Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating

In a futuristic dystopia with enforced beauty standards, a teen awaiting mandatory cosmetic surgery embarks on a journey to find her missing friend.

The Quartile Take

Uglies adapts Scott Westerfeld's YA novel but lands as a fairly generic dystopian teen adventure. The plot hits familiar beats — oppressive society, rebellious teen, missing friend, hidden truths — without meaningful subversion. Acting is serviceable but unremarkable, with characters that feel thinly written. Cinematography offers some decent visual world-building befitting its Netflix budget, slightly above the norm for the genre. Novelty is low; the beauty-standards dystopia concept had some freshness in the source novel but arrives on screen feeling derivative of Divergent, The Giver, and similar YA adaptations. The ending is abrupt and set-up-heavy for a sequel that may never materialize, leaving little satisfying resolution.
