Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

A top Marine sniper, Bob Lee Swagger, leaves the military after a mission goes horribly awry and disappears, living in seclusion. He is coaxed back into service after a high-profile government official convinces him to help thwart a plot to kill the President of the United States. Ultimately double-crossed and framed for the attempt, Swagger becomes the target of a nationwide manhunt. He goes on the run to track the real killer and find out who exactly set him up, and why, eventually seeking revenge against some of the most powerful and corrupt leaders in the free world.

The Quartile Take

Shooter is a competent, entertaining action-thriller that hits its genre beats reliably. The conspiracy plot involving a framed sniper is engaging but follows a well-worn template — the lone wronged hero vs. corrupt establishment — without significantly reinventing it. Mark Wahlberg is solid in the lead and the supporting cast (Michael Peña, Danny Glover, Ned Beatty) does credible work, though no performance rises to truly memorable. Cinematography is workmanlike and functional, with some decent outdoor location photography but nothing visually distinctive. The film's biggest weakness is novelty: it draws heavily from conspiracy thriller conventions and similar 'man on the run' action films without offering a particularly fresh perspective. The ending delivers satisfying if somewhat implausible revenge-fantasy closure, fitting the genre expectations. Overall a above-average popcorn thriller that earns its reputation as a reliable genre entry without breaking new ground.
