Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating
A one-time rodeo star and washed-up horse breeder takes a job from an ex-boss to bring the man's young son home from Mexico.
Cry Macho is a languid, understated neo-western that struggles to generate much dramatic momentum. Clint Eastwood, directing and starring at 91, brings undeniable presence but limited range to a role that asks more than he can comfortably deliver. The plot meanders through familiar redemption-road-trip territory without much tension or surprise, leaning heavily on genre clichés. The Mexico-set cinematography provides some warm, sun-drenched atmosphere but rarely rises above functional. The ending is low-key to the point of feeling anticlimactic. The film has a certain weathered charm but is too inert and derivative to distinguish itself meaningfully.
