Like Stars on Earth (2007)

Quartile rating: 8/10 · 1 rating

Ishaan Awasthi is an eight-year-old whose world is filled with wonders that no one else seems to appreciate. Colours, fish, dogs, and kites don't seem important to the adults, who are much more interested in things like homework, marks, and neatness. Ishaan cannot seem to get anything right in class; he is then sent to boarding school, where his life changes forever.

The Quartile Take

Like Stars on Earth is a heartfelt Indian drama that handles dyslexia and childhood sensitivity with genuine warmth. Aamir Khan's performance as the art teacher is the standout, bringing charisma and depth that elevates the film considerably, and the child lead Darsheel Safary is remarkably naturalistic. The plot follows a somewhat predictable arc — misunderstood child, transformative mentor, redemptive climax — that echoes films like Dead Poets Society, keeping Novelty modest. Cinematography is colorful and visually expressive in depicting Ishaan's imaginative inner world but doesn't push into truly distinctive territory. The ending's emotional payoff is effective but leans melodramatic, consistent with Bollywood conventions. Overall a well-crafted, emotionally resonant film held back slightly by its formulaic structure.
