Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris (2022)

Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating

A 1950s London cleaning lady falls in love with an haute couture dress by Christian Dior and decides to gamble everything for the sake of this folly.

The Quartile Take

Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris is a warmly performed, crowd-pleasing charmer elevated chiefly by Lesley Manville's luminous central performance. The plot follows a familiar wish-fulfillment arc — the humble outsider conquering a glamorous world — without subverting expectations. Cinematography capably evokes 1950s London grime and Parisian splendour but rarely transcends the picturesque. Novelty is modest: the premise is endearing but the fish-out-of-water structure and class-commentary beats are well-trodden. The ending resolves warmly and satisfyingly but predictably. Manville and a strong supporting cast (Isabelle Huppert, Lucas Bravo) elevate the material comfortably above the average.
