Father Gabriele Amorth, Chief Exorcist of the Vatican, investigates a young boy's terrifying possession and ends up uncovering a centuries-old conspiracy the Vatican has desperately tried to keep hidden.
The Pope's Exorcist is a competent but formulaic possession horror film elevated primarily by Russell Crowe's charismatic and surprisingly playful turn as Father Amorth. The plot follows well-worn exorcism movie beats with a Dan Brown-esque Vatican conspiracy layer that feels more campy than revelatory. Cinematography is serviceable, delivering expected gothic atmosphere and moody lighting without doing anything particularly distinctive. The Vatican conspiracy angle adds some flavor but the film doesn't distinguish itself meaningfully from the crowded possession subgenre. The ending leans into sequel setup in a way that feels unsatisfying as a standalone conclusion.
