Love Again (2023)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Mira Ray, dealing with the loss of her fiancé, John, sends a series of romantic texts to his old cell phone number… not realizing the number was reassigned to Rob Burns' new work phone. Rob, a journalist, is captivated by the honesty in the beautifully confessional texts. When he’s assigned to write a profile of megastar Céline Dion, he enlists her help in figuring out how to meet Mira in person and win her heart.

The Quartile Take

Love Again is a pleasant but formulaic romantic comedy that hits familiar beats without much distinction. The central premise of misdirected texts has modest charm but the execution is predictable, leaning heavily on contrivance. Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Sam Heughan are likable enough, and Céline Dion's self-aware cameo adds a layer of fun, but the acting rarely transcends the material. Cinematography is unremarkable rom-com visual language set against a generic New York backdrop. Novelty is low — it's a remake of a German film (SMS für Dich) and follows a well-worn genre template, with Céline Dion's presence being the only genuinely distinctive element. The ending is predictable and rushed, offering little emotional payoff beyond genre expectation.
