The Quartile Take

Jupiter Ascending is a visually spectacular but narratively chaotic space opera from the Wachowskis. The plot is convoluted and struggles under the weight of its own world-building ambitions, with motivations that shift awkwardly and pacing that lurches between set pieces. The acting is uneven — Channing Tatum plays his role with wooden earnestness, Eddie Redmayne delivers an oddly campy villain performance, and Mila Kunis is largely reactive. Cinematography is genuinely exceptional, with sweeping cosmic vistas, intricate production design, and kinetic action sequences that showcase top-tier visual effects and composition. Novelty earns a mid score — it's an original IP with grand ambition and a distinctly Wachowski aesthetic, but the story draws heavily from familiar chosen-one and dynastic intrigue tropes without fully transcending them. The ending fumbles the landing, resolving the sprawling conflict in an anticlimactic and rushed fashion that leaves the world-building feeling wasted.
