A pair of newlyweds must fight to survive when their wedding reception descends into chaos and carnage when their guests become infected by a virus that turns them into hungry zombies.
[REC]³ Genesis is a notable step down from the tense, claustrophobic brilliance of the original [REC] films. The plot is thin and generic — a zombie outbreak at a wedding offers little beyond its setting as novelty. The acting is serviceable but unremarkable, with characters functioning mostly as zombie fodder. The film does make a somewhat interesting choice by abandoning the found-footage format midway through in favor of conventional cinematography, which gives it a slightly different visual identity, but this shift also feels inconsistent rather than purposeful. The zombie-at-a-wedding concept has a degree of fun to it but the execution is largely by-the-numbers, relying on gore rather than tension or character. The ending is abrupt and unsatisfying, lacking the gut-punch of its predecessors. Overall it feels like a franchise cash-in that squanders its premise.
