A couple on a romantic getaway find themselves stranded at sea when a tropical storm sweeps away their villa. In order to survive, they are forced to fight the elements, while sharks circle below.

The Quartile Take

The Requin is a formulaic shark survival thriller that offers little to distinguish itself from the crowded genre. The plot follows a predictable survival-at-sea template with thin character development and contrived dramatic beats. The acting is serviceable at best, with Alicia Silverstone and James Tupper unable to elevate underdeveloped material. Cinematography is competent but unremarkable, with the CGI sharks receiving particular criticism for poor quality. The film adds nothing novel to the shark or survival-horror subgenre, recycling familiar tropes without a distinctive voice. The ending resolves predictably with minimal emotional payoff. Across the board, the film sits solidly below average, consistent with its poor critical and audience reception.
