The Quartile Take

Spielberg's semi-autobiographical coming-of-age story is elevated by extraordinary performances—particularly Michelle Williams and Gabriel LaBelle—and masterful cinematography that reflects the film's very subject of visual storytelling. The ending, featuring a legendary cameo and a perfect final shot, is among the best of the year. The plot, while emotionally rich, follows a fairly conventional coming-of-age arc, and while the filmmaking-as-lens conceit is beautifully executed, it isn't wholly unprecedented as a narrative device. Acting and Cinematography are genuine standouts; the Ending is exceptional; Plot and Novelty are solid but not the film's crown jewels.
