After escaping with Newt and Hicks from the alien planet, Ripley crash lands on Fiorina 161, a prison planet and host to a correctional facility. Unfortunately, although Newt and Hicks do not survive the crash, a more unwelcome visitor does. The prison does not allow weapons of any kind, and with aid being a long time away, the prisoners must simply survive in any way they can.
Alien³ is a genuinely divisive entry that earns marks for its bleak, oppressive atmosphere and Fincher's stark visual sensibility even under studio interference. The plot suffers from killing off fan-favorite characters immediately and a somewhat repetitive cat-and-mouse structure, but the grim penal colony setting adds texture. Acting is solid — Weaver anchors it with conviction and Charles S. Dutton brings gravitas — though supporting characters are thinly written. Cinematography is moody and claustrophobic but inconsistent, partly due to the troubled production. Novelty is moderate: it strips away the action-sequel formula for something more austere and philosophical, but it's still recognizably formulaic within the franchise. The ending, however, is genuinely striking — Ripley's self-sacrifice is a bold, thematically resonant conclusion that elevates the whole film.
