The Quartile Take

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen is a pleasant, lightly quirky romantic drama with a charming premise — bringing fly-fishing to the Yemeni desert as a parable of faith and cross-cultural connection. The plot is engaging enough but meanders and relies on convenient contrivances, particularly in its romantic arc. Acting from Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt is warm and likable without being truly exceptional. Cinematography is competent with some attractive desert and Scottish Highland scenery but nothing especially distinctive. The film's premise is novel enough to stand out, but the execution follows fairly predictable rom-com drama beats. The ending feels rushed and somewhat unsatisfying, resolving its central emotional conflicts too neatly and quickly after the dramatic flood sequence, leaving the romance feeling underbaked.
