Chasing Mavericks (2012)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

Surfer Jay Moriarity sets out to ride the Northern California break known as Mavericks.

The Quartile Take

Chasing Mavericks is a competent, heartfelt sports drama based on the true story of Jay Moriarity and his mentor Frosty Hesson. The cinematography stands out clearly, with stunning ocean photography and impressive wave footage at the legendary Mavericks break giving it a visceral, spectacular quality. The plot follows a fairly familiar mentor-protégé sports underdog template without subverting expectations, and while earnest, it hits predictable beats. Acting is solid but unremarkable — Gerard Butler brings warmth to Frosty but the script limits deeper character work. Novelty is low because the film adheres closely to sports-drama conventions despite its unique surfing setting. The ending is emotionally effective given the real-life tragedy of Moriarity, though it feels rushed and somewhat underdeveloped.
