Paris (2008)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

Pierre, a professional dancer, suffers from a serious heart disease. While he is waiting for a transplant which may (or may not) save his life, he has nothing better to do than look at the people around him, from the balcony of his Paris apartment.

The Quartile Take

Cédric Klapisch's ensemble portrait of Paris is visually rich and warmly observed, with the city itself rendered beautifully through cinematography that captures everyday Parisian life with a documentary intimacy. The interlocking stories radiating from Pierre's window work reasonably well as a city symphony, and the cast (Juliette Binoche, Romain Duris, Fabrice Luchini) perform solidly. However, the episodic structure means some storylines feel thin or unresolved, and the ending lacks the emotional payoff the setup promises — Pierre's fate and the surrounding lives drift to a close without strong dramatic resolution. The film is pleasantly distinctive in its mosaic approach but doesn't push far enough into originality to stand out among ensemble city portraits.
