Open Water (2004)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Two divers are left out at sea without a boat. There’s nothing but water for miles, unless they look at what’s underneath them...

The Quartile Take

Open Water is a lean, stripped-down survival horror with a genuinely distinctive premise and execution — shot on consumer-grade digital video with non-professional actors in real open water with real sharks, giving it a raw, documentary-like authenticity that sets it apart. Its novelty and minimalist approach are its strongest assets. The plot is deliberately thin by design, relying on dread and atmosphere rather than narrative complexity, which works for some but frustrates others. Acting is serviceable and naturalistic. The ending is bleak and committed, consistent with the film's ethos, though not entirely surprising given the tone.
