In 1909, two explorers fight to survive after they're left behind while on a Danish expedition in ice-covered Greenland.
Against the Ice is a competent survival drama based on the true story of the Danmark Expedition, offering solid performances from Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (who also co-wrote the script) and Joe Cole. The cinematography captures the harsh Greenlandic landscape adequately but rarely rises above functional. The plot follows a familiar survival-against-the-odds structure with few surprises, and the ending feels abrupt and understated rather than earned. The film adds little new to the polar exploration genre, feeling derivative of similar survival pictures, and its true-story basis is its main distinguishing feature rather than any distinctive cinematic voice.
