The Holdovers (2023)

The Quartile Take

The Holdovers is elevated almost entirely by its exceptional performances — Paul Giamatti delivers one of his finest career turns, with strong support from Dominic Sessa and Da'Vine Joy Randolph (Oscar-winning). The film wears its influences proudly (Alexander Payne channeling 1970s cinema aesthetics, grain and all), which gives it charm but limits its distinctiveness. The plot is a familiar misfit-bonding arc set over the holidays, hitting expected emotional beats without surprising. Cinematography is lovingly period-authentic but not visually daring. The ending is satisfying and emotionally earned without being revelatory. Acting is the clear standout — genuinely exceptional work that anchors an otherwise warm but conventional drama.
