As the world is overrun by zombies, scientists and military personnel in an underground Florida bunker must decide on how they should deal with the undead.
Romero's third Dead film is a genuinely distinctive entry in zombie cinema — its claustrophobic bunker setting, philosophical tension between militarism and scientific inquiry, and the iconic Bub the domesticated zombie give it a singular identity. The practical gore effects by Tom Savini remain benchmark work. Acting is uneven but serviceable, with Joseph Pilato's Rhodes being memorably over-the-top. The plot's slow-burn tension and character conflict work well within the confined setting, though pacing can drag. The cinematography is functional and grim but not exceptional. The ending delivers satisfying catharsis but follows genre expectations. Novelty is the clear standout — the exploration of zombie consciousness and the military-vs-science dynamic make it one of the most intellectually ambitious zombie films of its era.
