Two South Africans set out to discover what happened to their unlikely musical hero, the mysterious 1970s rock 'n' roller, Rodriguez.

The Quartile Take

Searching for Sugar Man is a remarkable documentary with an almost unbelievable true story at its heart — the mystery of Rodriguez, a forgotten Detroit musician who became a massive cultural icon in apartheid-era South Africa without ever knowing it. The narrative unfolds like a detective thriller, making its Plot genuinely exceptional. Novelty is high because the story is so singular and improbable it could only be real; the film has a unique, melancholic tone that sets it apart from standard music docs. The Ending — the revelation and Rodriguez's reunion with his South African fans — is emotionally powerful and deeply satisfying. Cinematography is competent and evocative but not groundbreaking for the documentary form. Acting (interviews and subject presence) is earnest and affecting though unpolished in places.
