The Ritual Killer (2023)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Unable to process the death of his daughter, Detective Boyd embarks on a hunt for a serial killer who murders according to a brutal tribal ritual: Muti. The only person who can help Boyd is Professor Mackles, an anthropologist who hides an unspeakable secret. The line between sanity and madness thins as Boyd goes deeper into the killer’s world.

The Quartile Take

The Ritual Killer blends a standard grief-stricken detective narrative with the relatively underexplored concept of Muti ritual killings, giving it a modest boost in Novelty for its cultural specificity. However, the plot largely follows well-worn serial killer procedural beats without meaningful subversion, and the execution feels generic. Acting is workmanlike at best, with Cole Hauser and Morgan Freeman going through familiar motions without standout moments. Cinematography is functional but unremarkable, offering little visual identity beyond standard thriller aesthetics. The ending resolves predictably and without much impact, failing to elevate the film beyond its B-movie constraints.
