Oppenheimer (2023)

Quartile rating: 9/10 · 3 ratings

The story of J. Robert Oppenheimer's role in the development of the atomic bomb during World War II.

The Quartile Take

Oppenheimer is a monumental biographical drama with exceptional performances across the board — Cillian Murphy anchors a career-best role surrounded by a remarkable ensemble. Nolan's cinematography is genuinely extraordinary, with IMAX large-format work and practical effects for the Trinity test creating visceral, unforgettable imagery. The plot weaves a complex, non-linear structure across the Manhattan Project and the security hearing with impressive ambition and density. Novelty is strong but not exceptional — it follows established biopic and Nolan-thriller conventions, and while the execution is distinctive, the form isn't groundbreaking. The ending, resolved through the parallel hearing structure and Einstein callback, is intellectually satisfying but somewhat muted emotionally, leaving the moral weight of Oppenheimer's legacy more implied than fully landed.
