The Blob (1958)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

A drive-in favorite, this sci-fi classic follows teenagers Steve and his best girl, Jane, as they try to protect their hometown from a gelatinous alien life form that engulfs everything it touches. The first to discover the substance and live to tell about it, Steve and Jane witness the blob destroying an elderly man, then it growing to a terrifying size. But no one else has seen the goo, and policeman Dave refuses to believe the kids without proof.

The Quartile Take

The Blob is a solid, enjoyable 1950s sci-fi horror drive-in classic. The plot is straightforward but effectively executed for its genre and era — teenagers versus a creeping alien menace, with the added tension of disbelieving adults. Acting is serviceable at best; Steve McQueen (in his film debut) has charisma but the performances are broadly genre-standard. Cinematography is competent but unremarkable, with the blob's gelatinous effects being a modest practical achievement for the time. Novelty earns a modest above-average mark — the amorphous, ever-growing blob is a memorably singular monster concept that stood apart from the giant-insect or atomic-mutant fare dominating the era. The ending is satisfying within genre conventions — the cold-as-a-solution is clever and memorable, though the final card ('The End?') is a crowd-pleasing but well-worn trick.
