On Quartile, Lord of Illusions scores 6/10 across five categories — strongest on Plot (Above Average), weakest on Cinematography (Below Average).
During a routine case in L.A., NY private investigator Harry D'Amour stumbles over members of a fanatic cult who are preparing for the resurrection of their leader Nix, a powerful magician who was killed 13 years earlier.
Clive Barker's occult noir hybrid has genuine atmosphere and an interesting Lovecraftian undercurrent, blending hardboiled detective fiction with supernatural horror in a reasonably distinctive way. The cult mythology and Nix's menacing presence give the film a stronger-than-average conceptual foundation. Acting is serviceable with Scott Bakula doing solid work, though the supporting cast is uneven. Cinematography captures a sleazy LA noir feel competently without being especially distinctive. The ending, however, fumbles the climax — the resurrection payoff feels underwhelming given the buildup, and the final confrontation lacks the visceral or thematic punch Barker's best work delivers. Novelty gets a slight edge for Barker's singular occult worldview and the genre mashup, but the execution is too uneven to fully reward the premise.
