Ruth and Harry decide to take a romantic backpacking trip through the Pacific Northwest, but amongst the beautiful scenery, Ruth makes an unexpected discovery that sets her off on a strange, frightening new path. The couple aren't alone in the woods, and they might not be the same when they come out...if they come out.
Significant Other is a modestly effective genre hybrid that blends relationship drama with alien body-horror in the Pacific Northwest wilderness. The premise has genuine intrigue and the two leads carry the intimate character work reasonably well, but the film struggles to fully deliver on its ambitions. The cinematography captures the lush forest setting competently without being visually distinctive. The alien-possession concept grafted onto a fraught relationship is a decent hook but the execution feels familiar once the cards are revealed. The ending deflates much of the tension built up, leaning into a twist that doesn't fully satisfy on either the emotional or genre level, leaving the film feeling like a missed opportunity despite its promising setup.
