The Quartile Take

The Eye (2008) is an American remake of the 2002 Hong Kong horror film of the same name, and it brings little new to the table. The premise—a blind person receiving a corneal transplant and subsequently seeing ghosts—is borrowed wholesale, and the execution feels formulaic and by-the-numbers. Jessica Alba's performance as the violinist protagonist is largely flat, failing to convey the psychological complexity the role demands, and the supporting cast offers little to compensate. Cinematography has some atmospheric moments in its ghost sequences but is otherwise unremarkable. The remake adds almost nothing distinctive in terms of voice, tone, or craft compared to its source material, earning it the lowest Novelty score. The ending attempts a dramatic climax but lands as predictable and emotionally unsatisfying, undermining whatever tension the film had built.
