The American President (1995)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

Widowed U.S. president Andrew Shepherd, one of the world's most powerful men, can have anything he wants -- and what he covets most is Sydney Ellen Wade, a Washington lobbyist. But Shepherd's attempts at courting her spark wild rumors and decimate his approval ratings.

The Quartile Take

The American President is a charming, well-executed romantic dramedy elevated significantly by strong performances, particularly from Michael Douglas and Annette Bening, who bring genuine warmth and chemistry to their roles. Aaron Sorkin's sharp, witty dialogue crackles throughout and previews the voice he'd perfect in The West Wing. The cinematography is competent and polished but unremarkable for a White House-set drama. The plot is engaging but ultimately formulaic — a predictable romantic arc with political window dressing that hits all the expected beats. Novelty suffers as the film treads familiar romantic territory without reinventing it, essentially a prestige rom-com with a presidential backdrop. The ending delivers an emotionally satisfying speech moment but wraps things up neatly and predictably, offering little surprise.
