A scientist trains a man with an advanced telepathic ability called 'scanning' to stop a dangerous Scanner with extraordinary psychic powers from waging war against non-Scanners.
Scanners is a solid Cronenberg genre piece elevated by its iconic exploding-head practical effects and body-horror sensibility. The plot is serviceable but somewhat thin and slow-burning, with the corporate conspiracy angle underdeveloped. Acting is uneven — Stephen Lack's lead performance is notably wooden, though Michael Ironside brings menace as Revok. Cinematography is competent and clinical, fitting Cronenberg's cold aesthetic without being particularly striking. Novelty is moderate — the scanning concept and visceral body-horror execution give it a distinctive Cronenberg fingerprint, though it sits within familiar sci-fi/paranormal territory. The ending delivers a memorably bizarre and satisfying confrontation that rewards patience.
