Quartile rating: 8/10 · 1 rating
A kidnapped boy strikes up a friendship with his captor: an escaped convict on the run from the law, headed by an honorable U.S. Marshal.
A Perfect World is elevated by its nuanced, emotionally complex script that subverts the chase-thriller formula into a melancholic character study. Costner delivers one of his finest performances, and T.J. Lowther as the boy holds his own convincingly. Eastwood's direction is assured but cinematographically functional rather than visually distinctive. The premise, while well-executed, draws on familiar road-movie and fugitive conventions, keeping Novelty moderate. The ending, however, is genuinely affecting and courageous — a bittersweet gut-punch that lingers long after viewing.
