Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating
World War II vet Paul Sutton falls for a pregnant and unwed woman who persuades him -- during their first encounter -- to pose as her husband so she can face her family.
A Walk in the Clouds is a lush, visually sumptuous romantic drama that excels in its gorgeous cinematography — Emmanuel Lubezki's golden-hued vineyard photography is genuinely stunning and remains the film's standout achievement. The plot is an earnest but fairly conventional wartime romance built on a familiar ruse premise (posing as a husband), hitting predictable beats without much surprise. Acting is competent and warm — Keanu Reeves is sincere if limited, while Anthony Quinn brings gravitas — but nothing transcends the material significantly. Novelty is low; it's a remake of a 1942 Mexican film and leans heavily on well-worn romantic tropes with little distinctive voice beyond its visual splendor. The ending resolves tidily and emotionally satisfyingly, if somewhat predictably, delivering the expected catharsis without any particular boldness.
