Four sisters come of age in America in the aftermath of the Civil War.
Gillian Armstrong's adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's beloved novel is elevated primarily by an exceptional ensemble cast — Winona Ryder, Susan Sarandon, and a young Claire Danes all deliver memorable performances. The cinematography is competent and period-appropriate but unremarkable. The plot faithfully follows well-trodden source material, offering little surprise to those familiar with the story. As an adaptation of a classic and oft-filmed novel, novelty is limited. The ending is satisfying but follows the conventional romantic resolution expected of the genre.
