Homicidal maniac Jason returns from the grave to cause more bloody mayhem. Young Tommy may have escaped from Crystal Lake, but he’s still haunted by the gruesome events that happened there. When gory murders start happening at the secluded halfway house for troubled teens where he now lives, it seems like his nightmarish nemesis, Jason, is back for more sadistic slaughters.
Friday the 13th Part V is one of the more divisive entries in the franchise, largely due to its controversial twist — the killer is not actually Jason but a copycat. While this whodunit angle adds a thin layer of novelty, the execution is muddled and the payoff feels like a cheat to fans. The plot is formulaic even by slasher standards, cycling through disposable characters at a halfway house with little investment. Acting is largely perfunctory, with Tommy Jarvis as an intriguing protagonist concept that goes underdeveloped. Cinematography is serviceable but unremarkable genre work. The ending, meant to set up Tommy as the next Jason, generates more confusion than dread. A below-average entry across the board, fitting its middling reputation.
