Totally Killer (2023)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

When the infamous "Sweet Sixteen Killer" returns 35 years after his first murder spree to claim another victim, 17-year-old Jamie accidentally travels back in time to 1987, determined to stop the killer before he can start.

The Quartile Take

Totally Killer blends time-travel mechanics with slasher tropes in a reasonably fun high-concept mashup, but the execution is uneven. The plot is serviceable and leans into its Back to the Future meets Scream premise with some self-awareness, though the mystery element is fairly predictable and the logic gets loose. Acting is broadly functional but rarely elevates the material — performances are competent genre work without standouts. Cinematography is workmanlike, capturing the 80s aesthetic with acceptable period detail but no distinctive visual flair. Novelty earns a modest bump for the specific mashup of slasher and time-travel comedy with meta-commentary, though the individual ingredients are well-worn. The ending wraps up tidily but without much punch, relying on expected emotional beats from the mother-daughter throughline without fully earning them.
