Rita, an underrated lawyer working for a large law firm more interested in getting criminals out of jail than bringing them to justice, is hired by the leader of a criminal organization.
Emilia Pérez is a genuinely audacious and singular work — a Spanish-language narco-musical about transgender identity and self-redemption, a combination that exists nowhere else in mainstream cinema. Jacques Audiard's direction is visually bold and inventive, with striking cinematography and choreography that blend crime thriller aesthetics with operatic musical numbers. The ensemble acting, particularly Zoe Saldaña (Golden Globe winner) and Karla Sofía Gascón, is committed and frequently electrifying. The film's novelty is nearly unmatched in recent memory for its sheer conception. However, the plot can feel tonally uneven and structurally episodic, and the final act, while emotionally ambitious, lands somewhat unevenly — the resolution feels rushed and melodramatic in ways that don't fully cohere with the film's earlier boldness.
