In the peaceful Colorado town of Snowfield, something evil has wiped out the community. And now, it's up to a group of people to stop it, or at least get out of Snowfield alive.
Phantoms is a middling late-90s horror adaptation of Dean Koontz's novel. The premise of an ancient organism wiping out a mountain town has some intrigue, but the execution is muddled and the pacing drags. The acting ranges from forgettable to campy, with a cast that includes Ben Affleck and Peter O'Toole in an underwritten role. Cinematography is competent for the genre with some effective atmospheric shots of the desolate town. The creature concept is reasonably interesting but the film doesn't do much that feels fresh or distinctive compared to other creature-feature horrors of the era. The ending feels rushed and unsatisfying, failing to capitalize on the buildup.
