Augusta, Georgia, United States, June 3, 2017. After running some errands, Reality Winner returns home, where she is approached by two men.
Reality (2023) is a remarkable formal experiment — the entire film is essentially a verbatim transcription of the FBI interrogation transcript of Reality Winner, performed with extraordinary fidelity. Sydney Sweeney delivers a career-best performance, conveying mounting dread and vulnerability within the constraints of documented dialogue. The novelty is genuine and high: the film's strict adherence to the real transcript as its only source material, combined with its almost theatrical staging, makes it a truly singular cinematic object. The plot, being constrained by real events and a single location, is gripping but limited in scope. Cinematography is functional and claustrophobic without being especially inventive. The ending, faithful to reality, is bleak and unresolved in a way that feels deliberately deflating — which is honest but not dramatically satisfying.
