The extraordinary story of Amy Winehouse’s early rise to fame from her early days in Camden through the making of her groundbreaking album, Back to Black that catapulted Winehouse to global fame. Told through Amy’s eyes and inspired by her deeply personal lyrics, the film explores and embraces the many layers of the iconic artist and the tumultuous love story at the center of one of the most legendary albums of all time.
Back to Black covers well-trodden biopic territory without finding a distinctive angle on Amy Winehouse's story. The plot hits familiar rise-and-fall beats, leaning heavily on the toxic romance with Blake Fielder-Civil while glossing over the deeper complexity of her artistry and mental health. Marisa Abela delivers a committed performance and captures Winehouse's mannerisms convincingly, though the script limits how deep she can go. Cinematography is competent with period-appropriate visuals recreating the Camden scene, but nothing particularly cinematic elevates the material. Novelty is low — the film claims to be told through Amy's eyes but largely reproduces the standard music biopic formula, offering little that wasn't already covered more compellingly in Asif Kapadia's 2015 documentary. The ending, covering her decline and death, feels rushed and emotionally muted, failing to land the tragic weight the story deserves.
